About Apopka, Florida: The Indoor Foliage Capital of the World
Apopka’s story starts long before the greenhouses. The earliest known inhabitants were the Acuera people, members of the Timucua confederation. They had disappeared by 1730, likely wiped out by diseases brought by Spanish colonists. The Seminole people moved in next, and they called the area Ahapopka, meaning “potato eating place” (Wikipedia). That name eventually became Apopka.
Among the Seminoles born here was the famous chief Coacoochee (Wild Cat), born around 1807 near Lake Apopka. Early American settlers built a major trading center on the foundations of the earlier settlement, and by 1857, the community had a Masonic lodge at what is now the intersection of Main Street (US 441) and Alabama Avenue.
In 1882, one mile in each direction from that lodge was officially incorporated as the “Town of Apopka City” (Museum of the Apopkans).
The railroad arrived in 1885, connecting Apopka to markets north and south. Citrus became king. But the devastating freeze of 1894 to 1895 killed crops and drove many settlers away. The ones who stayed replanted, diversified, and discovered that ferns grew incredibly well here. By the 1920s, commercial fern growing was booming, and Apopka earned the nickname “The Fern City.”
The fern growers kept experimenting. If ferns did well, why not other foliage plants? One variety after another was added to the nurseries, and Apopka became known worldwide as “The Indoor Foliage Capital of the World”, a title it still holds today. The rich muck lands around Lake Apopka also supported massive vegetable farming, with an estimated 20,000 acres under cultivation by the 1940s.
Apopka also holds a record for mayoral longevity. John H. Land was first elected mayor in 1949 and served for over 61 years (with one short gap), making him the longest serving full time mayor in the United States.
