I love doing business in Casselberry because this town has a story unlike any other city in Central Florida. Most people drive through on US 17/92 or SR 436 and don’t realize they’re passing through one of Seminole County’s oldest and most interesting communities.

Long before Hibbard Casselberry ever set foot here, Native American groups (specifically the St. Johns people) were living in this area as far back as 800 CE, according to the City of Casselberry’s official history page. In 1849, settlers built Fort Concord on the shores of Lake Concord during the Seminole Wars. The Concord Settlement that grew up around it became the oldest community in southwestern Seminole County.

Fast forward to 1926. Hibbard Casselberry, a salesman from Winnetka, Illinois, came to visit family in Winter Park and spotted some “pretty land” along the highway. He teamed up with Gordon Barnett, started selling real estate, and built one of the world’s largest ferneries. By 1940, about 300 residents voted to incorporate the “Town of Casselberry” as a tax free community, with Hibbard as its first mayor (Casselberry Timeline, City of Casselberry).

During World War II, the ferneries were declared non essential, so Casselberry pivoted. The town started making bomb parachutes, bandoliers, and hospital tent liners for the troops. Hibbard even bought a local horse racing track (which later became the Seminole Speedway, operating from 1945 to 1954).

On July 25, 1965, the town was officially reincorporated as the “City of Casselberry.” And in 1976, residents voted to bring back property taxes. Today, the Society for Historic Casselberry works to preserve this rich heritage, and the oldest surviving building in town is the Hooker Homestead on the shores of Lake Griffin, built in 1887.
