About Oviedo, Florida: Chickens, Celery Fields, and a City That Kept Its Soul
Oviedo has one of the best origin stories in Central Florida. After the Civil War, around 1875, a small group of homesteaders settled along the shores of Lake Jesup. Life was tough. They cooked outdoors, slept under mosquito nets, and burned rags to keep the bugs at bay. The fertile land made it worth the struggle. They grew celery, citrus, and eventually made Oviedo one of the most productive agricultural areas in Central Florida (City of Oviedo).
The settlement was originally called “Lake Jesup Community.” Mail arrived by riverboat twice a week, and a post office was set up with a Swedish immigrant named Andrew Aulin as postmaster. On March 13, 1879, Aulin renamed the post office Oviedo, choosing a Spanish name to honor Florida’s heritage. The name stuck, and so did the pronunciation: locals say “oh VEE doh.”
Henry Foster paid for a railway link to Oviedo and founded the Lake Jesup Steamboat Company, giving local farmers reliable transportation for their goods. Butler Boston, an African American citrus grower, helped establish Oviedo’s citrus economy by successfully growing tangerines and the famous temple orange. Andrew Duda Sr., an immigrant from Slovakia, arrived in the early 1900s and built a farming empire that still bears his name today through A. Duda & Sons.
Oviedo officially incorporated as a town in 1925 with about 800 residents, and became a city in 1967. The real game changer came in 1963, when a “space university” was announced nearby. That school became the University of Central Florida (UCF), now one of the largest universities in the country. The adjacent Central Florida Research Park, established in 1978, is the largest research park in Florida. Faculty, staff, and tech workers flooded into Oviedo, and the city’s population exploded.
And then there are the chickens. Oviedo became famous for the free roaming chickens that wandered through the historic downtown. The legend goes that around 1994, one chicken showed up at a local business and was fed. She had 13 chicks. Then a rooster appeared, and the rest is Oviedo history. The chickens have become a beloved symbol of the city’s quirky, small town character.
For my business, Oviedo’s blend of old agricultural families, UCF era growth, and recent booming development means every house call is different.
