Busby Antiques & Collectibles obtains an Important Collection of Antique Silver Holloware
This weekend Busby Antiques and Collectibles was fortunate enough to purchase a large and important collection of antique silver holloware. A majority of the collection consisted of Georgian Period English and Irish sterling with a couple of rare Irish provincial pieces included, but also represented were American Arts and Crafts pieces as well as fine Hand Wrought Mexican. Listed below are some of the highlights of the collection. You can view the full collection as well as many other pieces of fine antique sterling, silver plate, continental and coin silver at our online store.
Antique Ornate Hand Chased Victorian Sterling Holloware Waiter’s Tray c.1875
Barnard of London 86 Ozt 26″ x 16″
A stunning large hollowware Victorian era Sterling Silver waiters tray by silversmiths J,E,W & J Barnard of London, England. The piece measures 25.5″ from handle to handle by 15.75″ and weighs in at 2670 grams, or 85.8 troy ounces. It is hallmarked on the reverse with the Barnard Maker’s mark, the Queen Victoria Duty marks, city mark for London and a date letter of 1875. The top of the platter is expertly engraved with the Prentice family coat of arms bearing the logo “Droit Et Avant”.
Antique Arts & Crafts Period Woodside Sterling Hand Wrought
Holloware Water Pitcher Marshall Fields
A stunning and rare Hand Wrought Arts and Crafts period sterling holloware water pitcher by Woodside Sterling of New York, NY. Woodside produced high-quality hand crafted silver wares from 1896-1925. This particular piece was produced for Marshall Fields & Co of Chicago (see the retail mark on the bottom, along with the Woodside and Hand Wrought Sterling marks). The pitcher measures 9.5″ tall at the top of the handle, by 9″ wide from handle to spout, and weights 945 grams, or 30.3 troy ounces. The body has a beautiful lobed design with George Jensen Blossom influenced ornamentation, and a softly hammered hand raised finish. It sits atop four inward scrolled anthemion feet.
Rare/OOAK Sanborns Mexico Sterling Aztec
Calendar Disk Waiter’s Tray 20″ 51 Ozt
An extremely rare, possibly one of a kind Sterling Silver waiter’s tray in an Aztec Calendar Disk motif, hand made by Sanborn’s of Mexico City. This tray is hand wrought and hand chased, measuring 17″ in diameter and 20.5″ from handle to handle, and weighing in at 1590 grams, or 51.1 troy ounces. The piece is marked a with the “Sanborns Mexico Sterling” mark.
Pair of Georgian Irish Sterling Sauce Tureens
James Scott 32 Ozt 1805
A matched pair of classically formed Irish sterling silver holloware George III Sauce Tureens. Both Tureens bear marks for Dublin Ireland, with a date letter of 1805 and maker James Scott (could possibly be John Stoyte, but the date makes more sense for Scott). They have a combined weight of 1000 grams, or 32.1 troy ounces, and measure 9″ from handle to handle and 6″ tall at the top of the handle. The most incredible attribute of the pair is the condition: they look as if they were made 40 years ago! Apart from polish marks and some tiny scratches they are perfect and have never been monogrammed (they are hand raised and have a subtle hand hammed body; any monogram removal would disrupt the hammered look and be easily noticed). A truly rare find!
Rare Antique Irish Provincial Sterling Silver Sauce Boat
W.Reynolds 1765 Cork Georgian
An exceeding rare antique Irish Provincial Sterling sauce boat by William Teynolds of Cork, Ireland. This traditional design has 3 hoffed feet with applied shells and a typical scroll handle. Hand raised hammer marks are lightly visible, adding a great subtle hand-wrought look. The boat measures 8.5″ from handle to spout and 4″ tall at its highest point, and weighs in at 280 grams, or 9.0 troy ounces. One side is decorated with the family crest of a goat on top of a crown. Marked as pictured with the word “Sterling” and WR maker’s mark.
This Antique Silver Holloware piece was originally purchased from The Marshall Field Antique Silver Collection. The original documentation accompanies the piece and is pictured for your inspection.
